The Bio-Response High Temperature Continuous Batch EDS has become the industry standard for quality, technology, and reliablity for your BSL-3 or BSL-4 facility. This system operates at a user adjustable 250 - 305 degrees F (121 - 152 degrees C) depending on the types of microorganisms present in the lab. The High Temperature EDS is available in many redundant and non-redundant configurations to meet the space and processing needs of your facility.

二、High Temperature Continuous Batch EDS

High Temperature Continuous Batch Pros/Cons

Advantages (Pros) Operates at 121°C / 250°F or higher for thermal sterilization
Sterilization without question regardless of solids situation
Easy to validate
Parametric monitoring acceptable
Shorter Cook Cycle
Can be heated by electric immersion coils or steam coil
Can be heated by live steam
Fully ethernet integrated controls are a standard feature
Suitable for all biosafety levels (1-4)
Integral strainer basket standard for solids sterilization
One collector, two cooker systems can be fitted with an 85% energy recovery skid

Disadvantages (Cons) Higher cost system
Highest cost of operation (requires more energy to heat, more energy to cool)
Requires operation at pressure in a pressure vessel

General Discussion This is the gold standard for Effluent Decontamination Systems. It is the "wet heat sterilizer" regardless of solids content or organic conditions of the waste. Systems must feature (due to pressurized operation) an array of special design features to prevent problems (double inlet valves, power flush primary inlet valve, double discharge valves, etc.) so maintenance requirements are industry-standard very low, but are greater than the lower temperature or chemical only systems.

三、Thermochemical Continuous Batch EDS

The Bio-Response Thermochemical EDS is the perfect alternative for any Level 1-4 facility when the High Temperature EDS is out of budget. Aside from its lower initial cost, it has a wonderful advantage in that it can still function in the event of a steam utility failure. If you lose your steam supply, the system can keep your lab up and running with chemical-only cycles. On the other hand, it can also operate as a thermal-only system at up to 200 degrees F (93 degrees C) with an extended "exposure period" to ensure that full kill is achieved. This is an extremely versatile system that can adapt to your facility needs, and delivers performance and value that our competition can not touch.

Thermochemical Continuous Batch Pros/Cons

Advantages (Pros) Operates up to 93°C / 200°F with or without chemical catalyst
Medium cost system, medium cost of operation
Can operate on temperature alone, chemical alone, or temperature and chemical. Perfect in the event that heating utilities are lost.
Uses less cooling energy (water or chilled water), possible to use no cooling energy
Operates at ambient pressure
Can be heated by electric immersion coils or steam coil
Fully ethernet integrated controls are a standard feature
Suitable for all biosafety levels (1-4), can treat pathogenic spores (species, contact, and temperature dependent)
Can be used with several chemicals to best suite your application
May be heated by live steam injection
One collector, two cooker systems can be fitted with an 85% energy recovery skid

Disadvantages (Cons) Cannot be used with NaOCl due to stainless process tank, but can be used with a sterilant (ClO2)
Longer soak time with temperature process alone
Does not achieve recognized "sterilization" temperature of 121°C / 250°F, however, Bio-Response can help you with the proper exposure times to inactivate specific agents

General Discussion This lower cost, lower energy approach combines known thermal levels to destroy all level 3 and 4 agents with temperature alone, and the capability to operate with a chemical to catalyze the process. It can be used with KOH or NaOH to dissolve tissue and fats. It can also be electrically heated with immersion heaters or steam heated by a steam coil or live steam injection. If a problem exists with the steam supply, the operator can bump up chemical levels to continue processing as a chemical-only system, and can achieve sterilization using chlorine dioxide (the recommended chemical). This is a good compromise between system cost and system performance.

BELOW: This Thermo-Chemical EDS is compact and is designed to fit into a tight space. It utilizes our fast heating internal steam coils and all components are easily accessible for monitoring and maintenance. There are systems on the market that are not only extremely difficult to service, but they are dangerous to service. This system is also expandable and is shown below in its 100 gallon redundant cooker configuration (two 50 gallon cookers). Treatment is achieved by thermal reaction in a 60 minute cook cycle (user adjustable for more cook time), but it also features an automated chemical injection system for true Thermo-Chemical process results.

Small thermochemical EDS

BELOW: A Low Temperature Continuous Batch system that was designed for Agrobacterium. It heats to full temperature ( 93°C / 200°F) in 15 minutes thanks to our internal steam coil and offers a rapid turnaround time for maximum production.

 四、Chemical Continuous Batch EDS

The Bio-Response Chemical EDS is yet another alternative to help facilities that have a variety of challenges. Please do not associate this system's low cost with low performance. This EDS not only offers the lowest cost of operation, but it also offers the most rapid turnaround time for each cycle, thus allowing a physically smaller system for high capacity. This is a popular EDS design for our clients that do not have plant steam supply and do not wish to incur the cost and hassle of installing a dedicated steam generator. It is also a great solution for facilities with limited utilities, or those in remote locations that benefit from a less complicated EDS. This system is available in many sizes from small closet models to huge systems that can service multiple labs.

ABOVE: This chemical system was challenged with Bacillus subtilis and three bacteriophages by an independent laboratory. Greater than 99.9999% inactivation (>6log10 inactivation) was achieved in 10 minutues. Contact us for the full third part efficacy study.

Chemical Continuous Batch Pros/Cons

Advantages (Pros) Operates at ambient or slightly elevated temperature
Lowest cost system, lowest cost of operation
Fastest turn-around allows high capacity in a smaller system
Fewest components, simplest controls, lowest maintenance, longest service life
Good with reasonable level of solids
Can use a variety of chemicals depending on what is being processed
Plastic tanks will not corrode
Everything sees the chemical on the front end, so any initial discharge valve leakage would be guaranteed some degree of treatment
Requires no cooling water
Suitable for all biosafety levels (1-4)
One collector, two cooker systems can be fitted with an 85% energy recovery skid

Disadvantages (Cons) More difficult to validate from cycle to cycle (compared to a known time and termperature achievement)
Solids may create doubt (did we penetrate the solid?)
Requires absolute certainty of chemical volume injected into the cycle
Requires continuous provision of the chemical agent to be present

General Discussion Lowest cost, greatest simplicity, fastest turn-around of any type of EDS, requires maintenance of the chemical supply to the system, must be set-up on an overkill recipe to assure complete treatment under differing influent conditions (organic loading, solids levels, solids type, etc.)

Continuous Flow EDS

The Bio-Response Continuous Flow EDS is the ultimate system for your energy recovery needs. This EDS allows a constant flow for high capacity and is available in many sizes and configurations. We utilize a tube in tube heat exchanger for increased solids handling and reliability, yet achieve a 90% energy recovery. The system shown at the left operates at 15 liters per minute and features a 27,000 liter collection tank and redundant processing skids. The system is able to run one skid, automatically switch to the other, or run both depending on the rate at which it is receiving biowaste water from the lab. The skids are specifically designed to hold the effluent at full temperature for the desired time period and any effluent that is measured below temperature during heatup is automatically sent back through to be treated once more.
