Siemens announces 4,500 more layoffs,recent cuts top 10,000

Germany's Siemens promised4,500 additional layoffs on the heels of its original goal to reduce headcountby 7,800 employees, pushing the total number of jobless or soon-to-be-joblessemployees well past 10,000.

Nearlyhalf of the newest cuts targeting the power and gas division and"chronically low-profit businesses" will be in Germany. Investorssought more information about the underperformers during the Q2 fiscal year2015 earnings call, such as whether Siemens Healthcare units fall in thatcategory, but Siemens officials were tight-lipped, only revealing they areworth €15 billion ($16.89 billion) and will be fixed over time.

Butseverance charges of €17 million ($19.8 million) indicate Siemens Healthcarewas a participant in the company's bloodletting. That's the second highestamong the company's divisions following power and gas, which had severancescharges of €57 million ($64 million).

"Withthe initiation of these measures, the company's structural reorganization hasbeen completed for the most part," said Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser in astatement.

Ominously,Siemens Healthcare was singled out as one of the laggards during the previousearnings call, but this time around, company officials put a more positive spinon the numbers: revenues up 13% year over year to €3.2 billion, or $3.61billion (but only 3% at constant currencies and excluding newly bought or soldbusinesses), and profits down by 2% to €526 million ($593 million).

"We'veseen Healthcare growing double-digit, that's definitely something which welike. On the other hand, obviously, if you look at the large order volume inthe region, we see that there's a lot of tough comps year-over-year which needto be taken into consideration if you talk about comparisonyear-over-year," said Kaeser during the earnings call.

Hetouted a "volume recovery" in Europe, and strong results in China, saying itreturned to double-digit growth after being "a concern for a fewquarters." Although Siemens is best known for its imaging equipment,Kaeser said diagnostics hasalways been growing by double digits in China

 "Inhealthcare, interestingly enough, we see some ease on pricing in China. Thatmay also have to do with the fact that some local aspirations have come to morerealistic territory on what is possible and not and even there, peopleunderstand there is money to make at some point. So that's actually a positivelike-for-like," Kaeser said.

Companyofficials were pleased that margins rose to 16.4% (16.9% excluding severancepayments), from last year's 14.5%, though that's still lower than 18.8% in Q2FY 2014.

Thisquarter marks the first of Siemens Healthcare's existence as a standalone unitwithin the company, leading to the inevitable speculation that a spinoff fromthe conglomerate is planned.

Kaesersaid healthcare is unrelated to the rest of the company's operations, whichseemed to leave the door open to unloading the business under the rightconditions, saying, "If you look at the value chain of electrification,automation, digitalization, it's a very clear view on how tight generation,transmission, distribution and what have you are in the value chain, and thereis the Healthcare business. There's nothing wrong with having a successfulhealthcare business. But if there was any change in paradigms, this companywould be the first one to be prepared to act on any given change."

Overall,the completed divestitures of Siemens' hearing aid business for €1.6 billion($1.8 billion) and health IT business for €200 million ($225 million) helpedthe entirety of Siemens to earn a net income of €3.9 billion ($4.4 million)during the quarter. A smaller contribution came the sale of the company'smicrobiology business for €61 million ($68 million).
