State of Michigan Licenses Mediware Medication Management Products for 5 Behavioral Health Hospitals
Contract will replace aging technology with Mediware’s state-of-the-art medication safety software products; WORx Pharmacy, MediMAR, MediCOE, and MediREC

LENEXA, KS Mar. 1, 2010 - Mediware Information Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: MEDW), announced today that the Company’s core medication management software solutions have been licensed by the State of Michigan, Department of Community Health, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Administration, to replace existing systems in five hospitals across the state. The State of Michigan selected Mediware after an exhaustive RFP search and intensive review of competitive offerings. Mediware’s Medication Management product suite, which includes four integrated solutions that provide a ClosedLoop® environment for medication management from electronic order entry to administration of medications to patients, is already in use by a growing number of large behavioral health hospitals.

Commenting on the new contract, Thomas Mann, Mediware president and chief executive officer, said, “This is a major new relationship for Mediware and solid evidence that our focus on large behavioral health hospitals is well placed. These types of hospitals have specific medication management needs that require a combination of highly configurable software and rich clinical capabilities.” Mann continued, “Knowing that we were selected over large, sophisticated vendors as a result of a rigorous evaluation is further evidence that our products deliver real advantages to this market.”

The behavioral health segment of healthcare has been a growing market for Mediware. With the addition of Michigan, 13 state-run behavioral health networks now use Mediware Medication Management software in approximately 58 facilities. Including private behavioral health facilities like the Menninger Clinic, Mediware has more than 80 behavioral health hospitals using its software.

Mediware’s distinct advantage is that it offers ‘best-of-breed’ software product suites that focus on medication management and deliver market-leading functionality. This includes powerful patient safety checks and full integration with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.

Another powerful advantage of Mediware’s Medication Management software solution is in its integration of information from separate care processes into one, comprehensive and ClosedLoop system environment. This helps ensure that, from order entry to medication administration, the right drugs are administered to the right patients in the right way.

Specifically, the Mediware Medication Management product suite selected by the State of Michigan includes the following four software products:

WORx Pharmacy is a robust clinical software solution for hospital pharmacies enabling pharmacists to verify physician orders and prepare medication therapies for patients. WORx includes powerful clinical checks to ensure drug-to-patient appropriateness and is in use by large multi-facility hospitals including Henry Ford, Rochester General Hospital and the University of Michigan. With the addition of the State of Michigan’s inpatient psychiatric hospitals, 58 state-operated behavioral health hospitals are now using WORx in 13 states.

MediMAR is a software system used on handheld or mobile computers to provide final patient safety checks prior to administering medications to hospital patients. MediMAR helps hospitals avoid tragic and costly errors associated with providing the wrong drug or wrong dosage to its patients. MediMAR also supports regulatory requirements for medication safety, including personal identification and comprehensive drug information, to help ensure the right drugs are provided to the right patient, in the right dose and in the right way.

MediCOE is a hospital-based e-prescribing system that reduces transcription and legibility errors and increases efficiency of physicians, nurses and pharmacists by providing instant communication and online clinical checks at the time of order entry. MediCOE also allows physicians to review medication orders and patient status remotely, a feature particularly useful for behavioral health hospitals that have rotating or remote staff.

MediREC is a software system that satisfies recent regulatory requirements for care providers to reconcile patient medications at admission, transfer and discharge. MediREC captures medications taken at home and compares those with new prescriptions to reduce the risk of adverse interactions or duplicate therapies.

Mediware’s medication management expertise has grown from an initial focus on large acute care hospitals to behavioral health hospitals. More recently, Mediware has expanded its product offerings and capabilities to alternate care settings, including infusion, specialty pharmacy and home care.
